Perhaps one of the most exciting aspects of planning a trip is deciding how you’ll spend your time. Whether you’re looking for action and exploration or just a quiet weekend away, there are tons of activities suited for all desires and lifestyles. Our rural setting provides the perfect backdrop and playground for an array of outdoor activities.
Deep Creek Lake is suited for speed boats, pontoon boats, sailboats, personal watercrafts, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, swimming, wakeboarding, wake surfing, and water skiing! The lake is generally used April through October. Another lake favorite is fishing! Anglers enjoy the lake almost year-round with open water and ice fishing seasons. Aside from the lake, visitors and locals often take advantage of the several state parks and hiking trails scattered throughout the county. Take a lazy stroll through Swallow Falls State Park or tackle the hike to Maryland’s Highest Point! Some hiking trails are groomed for winter cross-country skiing, too! Road and Mountain biking are also very popular in our area. Our challenging terrain is perfect for cyclists of all levels, and several major races take place in our area, including the Gran Fondo, the Savageman Triathlon, and the Race Across America.
The abundant natural snow and cold temperatures create a winter wonderland, providing the perfect terrain for downhill skiing at Wisp Resort, cross-country skiing, and even riding snowmobiles across the frozen lake! Wisp Resort also offers several other winter activities in their adventure park. Slide down the lanes in the tubing park solo or with your group, then lace up your skates and glide across the ice rink!
While the fair-weather activities may seem aplenty, there are several things to do when the weather is less than cooperative! The Discovery Center, located alongside Deep Creek Lake State Park, is a truly unique experience for visitors of all ages. The aviary and hands-on nature experiences are geared towards education about our area and its history. Another great rainy day activity is local shopping. Whether you’re looking for Deep Creek Lake memorabilia or looking to browse through craft or antique stores, there are a lot of options! Take advantage of our rural communities’ agriculture at the bi-weekly seasonal farmers market in Oakland or visit other local stores and farms for their products. Visit nearby Oakland to browse through the museums chronically the history of Deep Creek Lake and Garrett County and local specialty store, too. Pop into Smiley’s Fun Zone or Funland for indoor arcade activities, visit the CARC competition pool or water therapy pool; there’s always something to do!
